“October is American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month
What Can An Adopted Dog Bring To Your Life?
There are as many responses to that question as there are dogs in this world! That’s why — during American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month celebration in October — we’re encouraging people to adopt a shelter dog and experience the joy of finding their own answers.
Are you looking for:
- an exercise buddy?
- a best friend and confidant for your child?
- a dog you can train with to learn animal-assisted therapy?
- a partner in agility competitions?
- a constant companion for your favorite senior citizen?
- a fuzzy face to greet you after a hard day at work?
An adopted dog can be all these things — and so much more!
Your local shelter is the perfect place to find dogs of every type, size, age and personality — all waiting for a loving home. Or, if you prefer a particular breed that isn’t currently available at a shelter, go online to find a breed-specific rescue group in need of adopters like you.”
We found Bailey (then called “Yankee”) on Petfinder.com, in October 2010. Read more about his adoption HERE (and you can laugh your ass off at how naive I was in October 2011, before Captain Destruction really got going!)
REMEMBER! Even if you are not able to adopt a rescued animal at this time, most shelters have wish lists of food, equipment and other supplies that they need to operate EVERY DAY. Please consider a donation of supplies or look into financially sponsoring the care of a fostered animal. Even the smallest commitment can make a huge different in a shelter dog’s life.
he is so cute…d dashing looking dog in the picture… 🙂
Thank you! (Bailey thanks you, too!)
Excellent post! And a good point about how much the shelters can use all sorts of donations. Plus they go directly to the organization and don’t waste your dollars w/administrative salaries. Don’t forget vets too can use supplies.
Thanks! Yes, you’re so right. Vets and clinics need love too! One of the coolest things I’ve seen is a friend’s child asked for shelter supplies in lieu of gifts – then the family delivered a huge basket of stuff to a shelter. Very cool.
wow, that friend sounds really amazing and thoughtful! and modest!
Oh yes, unbelievably so. She’s a real superlative of a human being. 🙂
